… Where Fencers Become National Competitors

Zeta Fencing is the home of sabre fencing champions from the Greater Boston Area and beyond. Our coaches’ dedication and experience make the difference. So does hard work. It takes many hours of practice, patience, and strong work ethic to succeed in fencing. Winning competitions requires more than basic athletic training. Our competitive classes teach mental fencing skills that go beyond the strip and make our fencers successful competitors in all aspects of life. As a small fencing club, we can reach outstanding results because we focus on only one of the three Olympic fencing weapons, the sabre. We do not offer competitive instruction for épée or foil fencers.

Our invitation-only Competitive Programs run for 10 months and require a fencer’s commitment for a full season. The programs include all aspects of training that competitive fencers need: conditioning, footwork, drills in a group setting, and many hours of bouting to gain fencing experience.

Both Competitive Programs are offered 2 times per week, each class lasts a full 2 hours. In addition to their assigned class times, students are invited to join up to 5 hours of open fencing every week, which is open to our competitive and high performance athletes. This schedule provides 9 hours of fencing with a flexible setting that includes athlete-focused instruction as well as supervised bouting with all skill levels. This is how we guarantee that our fencers receive the required structured training as well as fencing experience with a wide range of opponents – the optimal preparation for competitions.

At the beginning of the season, students will set up individual competition schedules with their coaches.

The Competitive Program 1 (Monday and Wednesday at 5:30-7:30pm) is for new and younger competitors. Students will focus on local and regional competition according to their skill level. The goal of the program is to take our young competitors to the next level and let them become successful national competitors. Most students in this class are around 9-13 years old.

In order to maintain a high level of competitive fencing, all competitive students are required to take a minimum of one weekly individual lesson in addition to group classes. Please contact us directly to schedule lessons.

Coach’s consent is required to join Zeta Fencing’s Competitive Program 1. Please contact us to schedule a personal evaluation with our coaches if you are interested in the program.

Fencers are required to use their own equipment during practice and competition.

The Competitive Program 2 (Tuesday and Thursday at 5:30-7:30pm) is for older and more experienced competitors. Students in this program are expected to start fencing nationally. Most students are 12-16 years old and compete in the Y14, cadet, and junior age categories.

In order to maintain a high level of competitive fencing, all competitive students are required to take a minimum of one weekly individual lesson in addition to group classes. Please contact us directly to schedule lessons.

While age and fencing level are the main criteria for placing students in one of our Competitive Programs, admitting students into Zeta Fencing’s Competitive Program 2 is exclusively our Head Coach’s decision that cannot be overturned by students or parents.

Class & Competition Schedule

Zeta Fencing’s Competitive Programs run continuously through the fencing season.

During the 2018-2019 season, classes will start directly after Labor Day on September 4, 2018 and end on June 30, 2019. Only major holidays will interrupt the class schedule. Zeta Fencing will be closed on Labor Day (September 3, 2018), for the Thanksgiving weekend (November 22-25, 2018), during Christmas/New Year’s break (December 24, 2018 – January 1, 2019) and on Memorial Day (May 27, 2019). Please be aware that this schedule is tentative and minor changes may be made at a later time.

Download the current version of Zeta’s schedule of recommended tournaments here (PDF). Fencers should use this schedule as their starting point for setting up a personal competition schedule for the season. Mark the tournaments you are interested in, then bring the page with your selection, comments, and questions to the club and discuss it with your personal coach. Please always confirm with your personal coach before you sign up for a tournament. If you are interested in attending a competition that’s not on the list, advise with your coach.

Program Fees & Registration

In order to sign up, students must commit to the entire season (or until the end of the season if they join later). Class fees can be paid monthly or for the entire season and are calculated as follows:

  • Program fee (9 hours of instruction/fencing per week) – $250 per month
  • Zeta Fencing club membership – $300 per season

We offer a family discount for all our classes. The first family member pays the full price, every additional family member receives a 25% discount on class fees. If family members are participating in programs with different fees, the higher-priced program has to be paid in full and the family discount is applied to the lower-priced program. For club membership, the reduced membership fee for additional family members is $150 per season.
