NEW: JULY CLASSES Toggle

Zeta Fencing will be OPEN in July and August. In July, we offer all classes listed below according to the posted schedules.

Zeta Fencing will be closed on July 3 in observance of Independence Day.

August programs can be found on the page Summer Programs 2020.

Beginner & Intermediate Classes

Zeta Fencing coaches understand the importance of a good start in a new sport. With our beginning students, we develop all the fundamental skills that will allow each fencer to reach his/her full potential. Students in the intermediate classes review fundamental fencing skills, learn new fencing moves, and deepen their understanding of the concepts of sabre fencing in order to prepare for the promotion to competitive programs later in the summer and fall. Students are admitted to the intermediate class based on the coach’s recommendation. Our approach to teaching new and continuing fencers is based on the following principles:

  • Age-appropriate teaching: Students are grouped by age and ability. Our coaches teach each age group according to their maturity, personalities, and ability levels. All classes are taught with “real,” Olympic-style fencing weapons and uniforms.
  • Small groups: In accordance with COVID-19 regulations, class size is limited. All students must bring a water bottle and wear a face covering while at Zeta Fencing.
  • 90-minute classes: Beginner and Intermediate Classes last 90 minutes so fencers have time to develop various, very different skill sets: agility and fitness, footwork, bladework, and bouting strategies.
  • Sportsmanship and Olympic values: Students learn about the history and the art of fencing. Beyond athletic skills, our classes encompass the traditions and values of the Olympic sport of fencing with lessons in true sportsmanship.
  • Minimum age of 7-8 years: Fencing is a challenging sport with rules that can be hard to understand and moves that can be difficult to execute for young children. Children under the age of 8 should develop their motor skills with age-appropriate workouts and only join our program when they are ready. If you are not sure whether your child is ready to join a beginner fencing class, please contact us to schedule a consultation with one of our coaches.
