Zeta Fencers Prepare for National and World Championships

As the fencing season 2016-2017 is coming to an end, Zeta’s fencers are busier than ever. They are preparing for the most important competitions of the season that will be held in July: National and World Championships.

USA Fencing’s National Championships will be held in Salt Lake City, Utah during July 1-10. Zeta Fencing has qualified 28 students who will fence in saber competitions spanning all age groups and skill levels. Our youngest competitors will take the strip in Youth 10 events for fencers who are 10 years or younger, while our top athletes will compete in the July Challenge against the nation’s best fencers.

Later the same month during July 19-26, the Fencing World Championships will be held in Leipzig, Germany. Zeta’s head coach Zoran Tulum will travel there as the National Coach for the USA Men’s Saber Team. His student Eli Dershwitz, currently ranked #11 in the world, will represent the USA as well as Zeta Fencing on the world stage.

Eli is looking back at a highly successful season. After fencing in his first Olympic Games in Rio last summer, he went on to win the NCAA Championship Title 2017 in Men’s Saber, a silver medal at the World Cup in Madrid, Spain in May, and another silver at the Pan American Championships in Montreal, Canada this June. Eli has won a World Championship Title before when he became the Under 20 World Champion in 2015. He will also fence for Team USA in the men’s saber team competition. As the current Pan American Champions, Team USA have their eyes on a World Championship medal.

Best of luck to all competitors, go Zeta and go USA!
